The art auction in aid of the animal rescue centre "A Place to Bark" run by Bernie Berlin will be commencing on the 1st December so make sure you check her listings at A Place 2 Bark.  What a great way to buy your Christmas presents and help our animal friends too!  I donated this piece entitled "Amethyst" using a vintage photo of my mum at her confirmation and I added some wire so that it can hang on a wall.   I hope it fetches a good price - otherwise I'll have to buy it myself!

The Thai Orangutans are safely home!

The 48 Thai Orangutans arrived at Nyaru Menteng on the 22nd November and are already beginning to settle in.  Now your help is needed in signing a petition against using Orangutans in advertising.

Did you know that an Orangutan is being used in a current advertising campaign with Telstra Bigpond (a major mobile phone service in Australia) featuring rocker Tommy Lee.  Orangutans are on the verge of extinction and exploiting these animals further promotes the illegal pet trade and to the animals demise.   Furthermore Tommy Lee is known to be Hepatitis C positive and the orangutan is at risk of catching this disease.  Please sign the petition Orangutans in Telstra Bigpond advert.

Stolen orangutans returned!

Breaking news from BOS(UK):

BOS UK is pleased to announce that 48 of the smuggled orangutans in
Thailand are on their way back to the forest of their birth as you read
this. We have worked long and hard for this result and couldn't have
achieved it without you, our supporters. Thanks also to the many NGO's who
also contributed to the campaign, especially Nature Alert.

Sadly, the orangutans' delayed return comes at a time when the BOS Nyaru
Menteng Rescue Centre struggles with an unanticipated deluge of rescued
orangutans as a result of the recent fires that raged through the region.
Until we can release wild orangutans into the release site which awaits
documentation from the authorities before we can go ahead, the centre is
again at capacity. The additional strain to the limited budget of the
project also means many more funds need to be found to care for these new
arrivals which bring the number of orangutans cared for at the centre to
almost 600!

STOP the illegal wildlife trade!

Operation Charm is working against all aspects of the illegal trade but one of the most important is the trade in traditional Chinese medicine, some of which is made from endangered species.

Statement by Ricky Gervais:  'I find it incredible that any one would want to buy a product containing endangered animals. It's not just illegal, it's sick and perverse. And don't think you can ease your conscience with "It was already dead" or "It's old or second hand". To purchase such goods is perpetuating and endorsing the market in killing species. Report any activity you think is linked to such revolting business.'

Last week we adopted a cat - a stray from the Cats Protection League.  She was called Hayley but we've renamed her Zuki (after the bike), is around one & a half years old and was living on the streets with her kittens.  She was rescued 3 weeks ago and after the kitties were weaned she was neutered.  Things haven't gone too well though - she seems to enjoy sinking her claws and teeth into me so now she has a few new names - psycho, schizo and demon cat to name just three!  Let's hope she gets bored before I need reconstructive surgery ...
